Fine art and freelance photographer specializing in street, architecture, landscape, event, documentary, and authentic portrait photography.
Artist Biography
Serge van Neck is a fine art photographer focused on urban and rural landscapes, as well as authentic portraiture. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Serge spent most of his adult life in the Phoenix, Arizona area, where in 2014 he started photography as a serious hobby. In 2018 he moved to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where he was inspired to photograph the landscape as well as rural life. He later became a member of Professional Photographers of America and earned his CPP certification in 2021. Since moving to Sioux Falls in 2021, Serge has immersed himself in street photography, using digital as well as analog media. One of his favorite photo spots is the downtown area, but he also enjoys photographing his own historic neighborhood as well as the various parks in and around the city. In January 2026 Serge began work on an art project titled “Sioux Falls Artists & Entrepreneurs: Creativity at Work”, producing a series of environmental portraits of local creators, artists and small business owners, eventually to be published as a photo book about the people who make Sioux Falls a great place to live.
Artist statement
One World. Many Lenses.™
I believe that the earth is a single homeland for all of humanity, and that the diversity of the human race is a cause for celebration, not conflict. That diversity is not only expressed in different nationalities, ethnicities, cultures and languages, but also in different world views and perspectives. Everyone perceives the world through their own “lens”. In the same way, the photographer captures not what is objectively there, but rather what the eye perceives through the lens. Since objectivity in photography is impossible—a photograph is a slice of spacetime without context—it is my job to provide that missing context, which is inevitably influenced by personal interpretation and state of mind, through editing or film selection. As Ansel Adams observed, “A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed, and is, thereby, a true manifestation of what one feels about life in its entirety.” Photography for me is also a form of meditation, even therapy; whether walking through a quiet neighborhood, a busy downtown street, or a park full of flowers, I’m in a “zone” where I become hyperaware of my surroundings and, to use a cliché, “see the beauty in the mundane”.
